Requirements to Rent a Car in Cancun: A Tourist’s Guide

Renting a car in Cancun gives you the freedom to explore beyond your hotel. You can plan a beach day in Puerto Morelos, visit cenotes near Playa del Carmen or spend several days discovering the Riviera Maya at your own pace.

Before booking, however, you may have a few questions: Will the rental company accept your driver’s license? Do you need a credit card? How much money should you set aside for the deposit?

Requirements vary between rental companies, so it helps to check the conditions of your reservation before traveling. Here is what to prepare and what to ask.

What documents do you need to rent a car in Cancun?

Start with a valid driver’s license and an accepted form of identification. For international visitors, that identification is usually a passport. Your rental company will also explain its payment requirements and how to provide the security deposit.

At Roady, tourists should prepare their driver’s license, identification, flight or accommodation details and the agreed deposit. Bring your original documents, and check that your license remains valid throughout the rental period.

If someone else will drive, mention this when requesting your quote. Having a license does not automatically authorize a passenger to drive the rental vehicle: the additional driver must be registered under the rental agreement.

Keep your booking confirmation and the company’s contact information somewhere you can access easily after landing.

Can you rent a car with a foreign driver’s license?

Ask the rental company to confirm that it accepts your license before you pay for the reservation. Tell the company which country issued it, when it expires and which vehicle category it authorizes you to drive.

You should also ask whether an International Driving Permit is needed for your particular document and itinerary. If you carry one, bring your original national driver’s license as well.

A rental company’s document requirements and the rules that apply while driving are separate questions. If you plan to travel beyond the usual tourist routes or into another state, confirm the permitted driving area and any additional requirements beforehand.

This is particularly useful if your license uses a different alphabet or has an unfamiliar format. A short conversation before departure can prevent uncertainty at pickup.

Do you need a credit card to rent a car in Cancun?

Payment policies differ. Some companies require a credit card for the security deposit even when they accept another method to pay for the rental. Others offer alternatives.

At Roady, a credit card is not mandatory. You can ask about providing the deposit in cash or by card and confirm the arrangements for your booking.

When comparing companies, ask two separate questions: How can I pay for the rental, and how can I provide the deposit? An accepted payment method for the rental does not necessarily meet the company’s guarantee requirements.

Also confirm whether the payment card must belong to the main driver. If you plan to use another traveler’s card, resolve that detail before arriving.

How does the car rental deposit work?

The security deposit supports the obligations described in your rental agreement. It is separate from the amount you pay to use the vehicle.

At Roady, the deposit is MXN 4,000 for cars and MXN 7,000 for larger vehicles, subject to confirmation for your selected category. The agreed deposit can be provided in cash or by card.

Ask when and how it will be returned, and what circumstances could lead to deductions. If you use a card, check whether the company processes a charge or a temporary authorization. Your bank’s processing time may affect when the released amount becomes available.

Before leaving, inspect the vehicle with the rental representative. Take photos or a video of existing marks, tires, windows, the interior, fuel level and dashboard. Make sure previous damage is recorded on the inspection form, then repeat the check when returning the car.

What should you check about rental car insurance?

“Insurance included” is a useful starting point, but it does not explain every part of your financial responsibility.

Request the included coverage, applicable deductibles, exclusions and accident reporting procedure in writing. Third-party liability protection, damage protection for the rental car and theft protection address different risks.

At Roady, you can request a quote explaining the included coverage and ask about optional Full Cover, priced at MXN 500 per rental day. Review its scope and exclusions before choosing it.

If your credit card offers rental car protection, contact the card provider to check its conditions for Mexico and your vehicle category. Then confirm with the rental company how that benefit would work alongside the rental agreement.

Save the assistance number before starting your trip. You should know whom to contact if the vehicle breaks down or an accident occurs.

What else should you confirm before pickup?

Check the exact pickup and return dates and times. Rentals are commonly calculated in 24-hour periods, and returning later than agreed may change the total.

If you arrive at Cancun Airport, request the meeting point and pickup instructions. Roady provides a complimentary airport-to-office shuttle; confirm the arrangements for your arrival terminal and share your flight details.

Also ask about the fuel policy, additional drivers, cancellation terms and permitted travel area. Roady vehicles should be returned with the same fuel level recorded at pickup.

Drivers aged 18–24 should confirm the young-driver fee, which is MXN 100 per day at Roady. If you need delivery to a hotel or a return in another location, ask for any applicable charges in advance.

Your final checklist before traveling

Before departure, make sure you have your original license, accepted identification, booking confirmation and the agreed payment method. Save the pickup instructions, assistance contact and written quote.

Check that the quote identifies the vehicle category, total rental price, deposit and coverage. If you are traveling with children or several suitcases, confirm that the chosen vehicle has enough room.

A little preparation makes it easier to begin your vacation with confidence. Contact Roady with your dates, number of travelers and planned route. We will help you review the vehicle options, documents, deposit and coverage before you decide to book.
